Spending time in nature is a wonderful way to spend time with children. If you can also combine it with benefits such as collecting delicious berries, it can turn into well-spent family time. However, to enjoy a pleasant day, you need to know how to dress for the forest to be comfortable, but also safe.
Forest outfit - what's worth remembering?
The forest clothing you choose will depend on the purpose of the trip. A mushroom-picking outfit may differ from the one used for an ordinary walk, and similarly, for berry picking you can choose a different set. In every case, however, you need to remember that the trip should be enjoyable, so you'll need comfortable forest clothing.
Depending on whether it's a long trip or an hour-long stroll, you should match your forest outfit accordingly. For a short walk, comfortable sweatpants and a sweatshirt will do fine. Assuming it's fairly dry. In such a situation, no special preparation will be needed. In such a light outfit you can walk through the forest and should feel comfortable. You'll also need comfortable shoes, e.g. trainers. However, if we're planning a longer outing outdoors, or a professional mushroom hunt, we should think about making our mushroom-picking outfit more thought-out.
How to dress for a mushroom-picking trip to the forest? Proper outfit and tips for beginner mushroom pickers

It's worth going mushroom picking early in the morning. It's still damp then, which needs to be taken into account when choosing a forest outfit. The best hauls can be found by heading to less frequented spots, further away from busy trails. And again, it's worth remembering that deep in the forest it may still be wet. Professional mushroom pickers, on the other hand, love to pick mushrooms after rain, as it's the best time for successful finds. That's why your forest outfit should take such conditions into account. Higher, waterproof shoes work well. Outerwear is often a raincoat or a waterproof cape, plus trousers that are resistant to moisture, or dry quickly when they get wet. Models that gain weight as they absorb water are very impractical and may start slipping down.
Essential mushroom-picking gear. What to take with you to the forest?

Every mushroom picker, regardless of age, should have a basket or bucket for the collected harvest. Let's not use plastic bags, as this is very unfavourable, not only for our harvest, which may ferment, but also for our health, as mushrooms can spoil quickly in them. A small knife for cutting mushrooms will definitely also come in handy, although you can use another method, such as twisting mushrooms out. Another essential element of mushroom-picking clothing is headwear. It will not only protect you from the sun on the way to the forest, but also from falling branches, bushes, or insects. It could be, for example, a baseball cap or a hat. It will also protect your head from ticks.
How to dress a child for the forest? Practical tips for parents of little mushroom pickers

Although you probably can't count on a several-hour-long mushroom hunt with children, a shorter trip can also be a success. It's not only quality time spent together, but also a great opportunity to learn. To start, it's worth taking care of children's safety first. Here are a few tips that will help you prepare for a mushroom-picking trip:
Forest clothing should be loose and comfortable. Mushroom picking is an activity that involves a lot of walking and bending down, so the outfit must ensure comfort.
- Choose a mushroom-picking outfit consisting of long trousers and a long-sleeve T-shirt. It's very important not to walk through the forest with exposed skin, as it's much easier to fall victim to ticks in such a situation, which are plentiful in forests at this time of year. Depending on the temperature, you can choose more layers of clothing, and layering with the onion method is a good idea.
- Be sure to bring headwear, it will protect not only your head and neck, but also your eyes from stray branches, falling pine cones, or cobwebs.
- Choose moisture-resistant clothing. Trousers and softshell jackets work great, as they're lightweight, breathable, and protect against wind and moisture. This type of clothing, such as softshell trousers, will also protect against needles, thorns, or other small elements getting stuck, which may happen when you need to make your way through bushes.

- Remember about mosquito and tick repellents. Gnats, mosquitoes, and spiders can make mushroom picking difficult, and ticks can be dangerous, especially for younger children. That's why the chosen mushroom-picking outfit should consist of trousers and a T-shirt finished with elastic cuffs, which will make it harder for ticks to travel, as they like warm and moist spots on the human body.
- Forest clothing should be light-coloured. This makes it much easier to spot a wandering tick on it, which can then be removed without any harm to health. Light colours will also make the child more visible from a distance. It's easy to get lost in the forest, and in lighter-coloured clothing we'll find them faster even in dense forest. Light colours also make it safer to be noticed by any hunters that may be around. Of course, you should never walk where hunting is taking place, but it's better to be extra visible. Vivid, noticeable colours will play a similar role and are the best choice.
What to take mushroom picking to make the trip more enjoyable? It's worth stocking up on food, drinks, and snacks. The amount, of course, depends on the length of the walk. You should also have a charged phone with you, which can be used for navigation or to call for help in case of an accident. If you're just teaching your child to recognise mushrooms, you can also take a pocket guide, where you'll look up the specimens you've found. Above all, however, remember to respect the place you're in, which is home to animals. So keep quiet and calm, don't litter, and never destroy anything.
