Currently, the fashion market is dominated by fast fashion. Quick, thoughtless shopping is, however, very harmful to the environment. In a way in opposition to this approach, the idea of slow fashion was born. See what slow fashion is and what this approach is about.
Slow fashion trend
There has been more and more talk about slow fashion recently, so it's worth finding out what this phenomenon is. The woman who first used this term is Kate Fletcher. A PhD from Chelsea College of Art&Design, and also a professor at the University of the Arts London. A valued and award-winning researcher in the field of sustainable fashion. She has published numerous publications and is also the author of books on this subject. Her main achievement is introducing a systemic approach to the issue of fashion. According to her, it is not enough to switch to new materials and production methods; more important is changing the way of thinking about fashion. This should form the basis of changes regarding slow fashion.
Slow fashion – what is it?

Slow fashion focuses on a conscious approach to fashion and clothes shopping. Consumers' needs are meant to play a key role in this approach. This trend reduces unnecessary shopping in favour of thoughtful, sensible and durable clothing choices. Conscious selection of clothes reduces the frequency of shopping. Impulsive purchases do not add any value to your wardrobe; it is better to invest in good-quality products, durable, produced in a sustainable way and with respect for the work of the people who make them. It is also important that clothes reflect our taste and needs, only then will they fit and best fulfil their role. Slow fashion is also a responsible approach to clothes we already own, promoting care for our own wardrobe as well as extending the life of clothes, e.g. through repairs.
Fast fashion – why should you give up this trend?
The production of the clothes we buy harms the environment. Fast fashion promoted by chain stores is a huge threat to ecology, and it usually also comes at the expense of the conditions in which the people who produce them are employed. Fast, mass production without care for product quality means clothes very quickly end up in landfills, adding to the pile of clothes already there. Seasonal fashion and new trends promoted by large clothing brands have accustomed us to constantly needing new clothes. Collections don't even always reflect the seasons anymore; they are created even more often than the seasons change. Fast production based solely on profit and not taking into account the actual clothing needs of consumers is very harmful to the planet. We should stop the consumerist approach to fashion as soon as possible and change our attitude to dressing. Only in this way can we help the environment, but also improve the quality of our lives.
How to choose clothes in the spirit of slow fashion?

Slow fashion is not difficult. It is conscious and very wise. All you need to do is change your approach to shopping to get closer to this idea. See how easy it is to do and what to pay attention to:
- Good-quality clothes. Such items are durable, do not wear out and last a long time. You can wear them for years, thus avoiding further unnecessary purchases. A sentimental connection with clothes is also very important in a sustainable approach to dressing. We take better care of clothes we like, wear them more often and more willingly, and they also carry pleasant associations.
- Classic cuts. Timeless cuts will last a long time and will always remain stylish and fashionable. Classics never go out of style.
- Colours should match each other. It is worth putting together your wardrobe in such a way that the colours match and can be freely combined in various combinations. Plain, single-colour clothes will definitely work better here than patterned fabrics.
- Take care of your clothes and follow the clothing care rules. Proper washing and drying of clothes allows them to stay in good condition for a long time.
- Don't throw away, give away or repair. Clothes that are in good condition but that we no longer want to wear can be given to other people. They will surely make someone happy. Similarly, if clothing gets damaged, it doesn't have to be thrown away right away; it's worth trying to repair it.
Following the less waste principle in life is also worth applying to fashion. Not wasting and generating as little waste as possible fits perfectly into the slow fashion movement. Shopping minimalism combined with thoughtful choices will certainly translate into less frequent and more sensible shopping. Creating a capsule wardrobe, which also fits perfectly into these trends, will help you create successful outfits much more easily and quickly. By buying less, you lose nothing; everything, however, starts with a change in the way of thinking, and that is exactly what slow fashion is based on. At MyBasic, we also try to follow this idea.
