The newborn period is a special time. Although it doesn't last long, it's the first moment when your little one arrives in the world. It's the first 28 days of a child's life. During this time, we need to take care of appropriate clothes for them. Parents certainly wonder what size will be best for a newborn and what they should choose. Here are our suggestions

Newborn clothing sizes

What size of clothing a newborn will need is always an individual matter and depends on the specific baby. Birth weight and the size of the baby after birth matter. Although this is a matter we cannot predict with 100% certainty, we can still prepare for this occasion by choosing the newborn size closest to the expected size of the baby. We can get this information from a medical examination. It's also useful to know that a full-term newborn should fit into clothes measuring 46-54 cm in length.

Newborn size – what are the options?

The most common newborn sizes start from 56. However, it sometimes happens that small babies or premature babies need smaller clothes. That's why at MyBasic we offer three sizes:

• 50-56,
• 56-62,
• 62-68.

Newborn clothing size 50 is the first option, these are clothes for the smallest babies. For a standard baby, the middle size 56-62 will work well.

How to measure the size of newborn clothes?

A newborn is not easy to measure. You need to measure from the top of the head to the heels, but this can be difficult. It's worth doing it in parts. From the top of the head to the bottom, and then to the heels. The fact that a baby rarely has straight legs doesn't help. In this situation, you can measure the distance from the top of the head to the hips, from the hips to the knees, and from the knees to the heels, and add these values together. This should give us an approximate height.

The most popular sizes of newborn clothes

As we already mentioned, the most popular size is 56. Most parents may choose these kinds of clothes. They are usually useful in the first month of a child's life. Of course, depending on the manufacturer, this size may be expressed as a range or as a single number. Here, in case of doubt, it's worth checking the size chart, where we should find additional information, such as sleeve length or chest circumference. It's also worth noting that some clothes may have a fold-up feature and can be used for a longer period.

Fitting a hat for a newborn

A hat for a baby should be gentle and soft. A cotton hat works best. Of course, the model should be matched to the circumstances - at the hospital and at home, a light version is enough at first, but when it comes to walks with the newborn, the hat should be matched to the weather.

How to measure a newborn's head size?

A hat is a newborn essential, but what hat size will be best for a newborn? For measuring, choose a soft, fabric tailor's tape measure. Measure the circumference from the baby's forehead and above the ears. Based on this, we can choose a hat, as hat circumferences are usually given. So these will be, for example, 34, 36, 40, etc.

If you don't know what sock size to choose for your newborn, measure your baby's foot, from the heel to the tip of the longest toe. This way we can determine the size of the newborn's foot. In the size chart, you should find the measurement you got, or it will fall within one of the ranges. For babies, socks measuring 7 to 9 cm in length often work well. This size is often indicated as 11/13, or only the age range may be given - it all depends on the manufacturer.
