No one needs convincing about the harmful effects of prolonged sun exposure. Just half an hour too much sunbathing and we feel the effects for several days. A child's skin is thinner than an adult's and contains less melanin – the brown pigment that protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation. We don't want to scare you, but it's worth remembering that skin cancer and melanoma are fatal diseases caused by UV radiation. Skin cancer is one of the three most common cancers in Poland.

How to protect a child's skin from the sun?

For most people, the first thought is "cream with UV filter". Creams are effective, but this is not a perfect solution:

• cream stops working after a few hours,
• it washes off in water,
• it can be applied too thinly or incorrectly,
• it's easy to forget to reapply.

What's more, we only use it in "obvious" places, such as the face and hands. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, the largest organisation fighting skin cancer, "clothing is the most effective form of sun protection". Unlike creams, clothing doesn't wash off, can't be put on incorrectly, and doesn't lose its properties after a few hours.

A hat on the head, one less thing to worry about

A child's head is most exposed to UV radiation, and it should be looked after first. For headwear to do its job well, it must meet several criteria:

• The brim should be at least 7.5 cm to shield the face, neck, shoulders and upper back, as well as easily overlooked areas such as the tops of the ears and the back of the neck.
• Made from tightly woven fabric. A loosely woven straw hat lets UV rays through.
• Additional UV filter.
