The meaning of grey
Grey is a colour of nature, we can find it in our surroundings. Rocks and stones are grey. It's a colour that surrounds us but doesn't stand out. Grey is often associated with anonymity and blending into the crowd. It can also mean a lack of confidence, a desire to remain unnoticed and stay a so-called wallflower. Grey is inseparably linked with the passage of time, hence grey hair signifies old age. It is also associated with dusk or fog.
The colour grey is neutral, impartial. It's often associated with sadness, depression, melancholy. It's frequently considered boring, dull or commonplace. Even in ancient times, grey was associated with dirt and poverty, so it had a rather poor reputation. On the other hand, it was later worn by Franciscans and Capuchins, so it also symbolised poverty and modesty, traits perceived very positively. In religion, grey was given the meaning of repentance and penance. Through the use of grey for military uniforms at the beginning of the 20th century, the colour began to be associated with conformism, and after being adopted by workers, also with the lower class.
